Checking my email while waiting for a meeting to start, one particular email jumped out at me. Subject line was simply: Contact Information Update. The content was fairly routine including the notice of a new job and new information. For me, I couldn’t wait until the meeting was over so that I could reply to the sender. I don’t normally get excited about contact updates. But this one…this one has a story. This sender had waited a very long time to be able to send this update. Interview after interview, hiring holds, delays in initiating a background check, delays and delays and delays. My notes indicated I had been helping her secure this job for almost a year.
Today, I celebrate with her. She is now working for a United State Department of Special Something. She has never stopped believing in her dream. She never gave up on this job. She kept at it and used her resources. As I write the first of many blog posts, I lead with this story because it reminds us all that our career dreams can take time. They are not instant. Filled with delays and barriers, we are tempted to give up and try an easier road. Today, I am reminded of the perseverance of someone with a dream. In the grand scheme of life, a year wasn’t that long after all. So, what are your dreams? |
